CHECKING CABLE AND CONNECTIONS
The cable contains three wires that
connect the inside unit and the outside unit. If either the black
or the white wires are broken or if the connections are bad (at any point
between the inside & outside units), the unit will not accumulate any
degree days on the 'heat only' counter. It is possible for the cable
to be broken and the black & white wires could be making contact with
each other. In that situation, the meter would accumulate approximately
100 degree days per day on both counters. If the green wire is broken
at any point between the units or the connection is bad, the meter will
accumulate approximately 100 degree days per day on both counters.
To check the cable for possible problems,
simply examine the cable for cracks, cuts, or exposed wires. It is
very important to examine the connections very carefully, especially if
the problem started when the meter was installed (or moved) or if the problem
began after a period of high winds.
To replace the cable, disconnect the
inside and outside units and remove the present cable. Use the same
path between the inside and outside units when replacing the cable.
The cable is a common 3 ply 18 gauge cable, which is available at most
electrical stores. We can also send you the cable immediately if
you call with the length of cable. Our phone number is (269) 343-1221.
It is generally suggested that the cable be replaced after 15 years of
good service.
